Centennial Park and Parthenon
We started the day with another Uber misdirect due to my having entered the wrong “Nashville Farmhouse” into the app. We able to course correct and had an interesting b’fast downtown. After that, we made our way to the Johnny Cash museum, which was entertaining. Then we tried to hail an Uber to take us to Vanderbilt and my phone ran out of juice. We got to the campus only to be caught out in a fairly heavy thunderstorm which we waited out cowering in an alcove surrounded by spiders etc. Upon a break in the downpour, we made our way to the Centennial park where the full size replica of the Parthenon sits. This beginning of this structure was associated with the Tennessee centennial in 1867 when an exhibition show was conducted. Apparently, the community liked the thing so much, a permanent replacement was conceived and built. Matthew marvelled at this degree of cultural appropriation and wondered aloud how white Americans have appropriated just about everything in the “culture”. He has a point there. Anyway, the Parthenon houses an art gallery and we wandered around inside for a bit while the lightning, thunder and heavy rain came down. Hopped in a cab and got a drop off at the Henley cocktail bar for a snack and libation before walking back to the hotel for a nap. Karen picked the 404 Kitchen/Gertie’s in the Gulch for dinner and we were able to walk as the rain had finally stopped completely. After dinner, we crossed the street to the Station Inn where we were entertained a jam session of bluegrass, this was a highlight for music entertainment in Nashville, very rustic old shanty venue.
