South Carolina with a whimper?

In spite of deep reservations about travel to Trumpopia, we took the decision to accept the generous invitation from Bill and Jane to visit their home away from home on Hilton Head Island.  At nearly the last minute, booked a flight through Dallas but had to shift our departure/return to Mondays.  Our hosts had their Owners Club hacienda for almost three months so thankfully were able to accommodate our schedule adjustment.  For once, our “one stop” journey went smoothly and despite a late departure from YYC, the tailwind caught us back up and the layover in DFW was really relaxed.  Arrived at SAV exactly on time and our golf clubs did too (hurray). Our private drivers picked us up pronto, and proceeded to miss an important turn which resulted in a very scenic drive through the Carolina back woods, at least it would have been scenic if not in the dark of night.  Managed to avoid the innumerable deers in the headlights while hearing the tale of woe the the Turks had suffered at the hands of the Pres.  Seems the new requirement to register as foreigners if in the USofA more than 30 days was a worry, and occurring on the weekend, no clear guidance was to be had from the Dept. of Homeland Security.  So they loaded up the truck and drove to Windsor!  Ontario that is!  14 hours driving to cross the border into Canada, grab a room and then cross back into Detroit.  All for no comfort as border agents in both directions seemed to have no idea what on earth an I-94 visa might be.  Some officials by phone (such as could be reached) provided mixed information, and based on various sources, the issue seemed to be serious enough that Bill and Jane took this remarkable journey all the way there and back (almost 30 hours driving) in a couple of days with no clear evidence that any of it had been necessary.  What a Cluster F!  Lucky us since their troubles had no impact on our travel day, but Turks were as usual the most gracious hosts imaginable, agreeing to spend another few hours in the car to drive into Savanna to get us.  Quite the story and left me feeling even more guilty for not insisting that we take an Uber from SAV.
