We’ll, winter caught up to us. The day started with a cold, rainy atmosphere, and deteriorated from there. Pretty soon, the mercury dropped below freezing and the ice started to form on the deck railing. Things were pretty quiet around the complex and we took it as read that “stay home” was the order of the day. Sadly, we discovered that the electric fireplace was inoperable. Sandy’s handyman husband Mike popped by to confirm that the remote control with new batteries didn’t solve the problem. It is likely that the fireplace does not get much use. So, stay home we did with my only venture out was to walk over to the Wurstfest fairground which abuts Landa Park. The holiday trailer park between here and there alongside the Comal river would be attractive to a fairly rough crowd methinks. A rather fat and really ugly Muscovy duck followed me around fearlessly, I guess I should have brought it some peanuts (not). The fairgrounds suggest that Worstfest is a sizeable undertaking. All this surrounds the Mill Pond, where German Settlers established the community originally with a mill and cotton gin. The settlers migrated up the Guadeloupe River in ox carts and found the natural artesian springs which source the Comal River, the “longest shortest river” in Texas as it empties into the Guadeloupe after only 2.5 miles. The warmish temperature (70 degrees F) and length make it very popular amongst “toobers” seeking escape from the summer heat. Not today.
