San Antonio

Our plan was to have a later b’fast and head in to San Antonio to explore the Alamo and famous River Walk.  The complicating factor was the necessity for negative COVID-19 PCR tests within 72 hours of flight home for the boys (actually, Myles has proof of recovery from infection, which should satisfy the CBA but …).  The usual confusion, misdirection, malfunctioning devices ensued which put a damper on the whole Alamo experience.  How we managed cansado, hambriento and sediento before 11 am remains a mystery, but patience shortened as we tried to find a suitable testing location.  Ultimately, we got the requisite appointments for the following morning back in New Braunfels after convincing “Siri” that the nearest Walgreens was not in Burnaby, BC.  Go figure.  With that done we wandered through the very crowded and busy River Walk looking for a suitable watering hole.  In typical fashion, this challenge was harder than one might imagine, but we succeeded and grabbed a libation and snack.  After that, we found a segment of the walk that was far less crowded and much more pleasant to stroll along the San Antonio river and get some sense of the ambiance.  Our dinner reservation at Budros was at 4:00 and we met Tim and Dru there for a great dining experience sitting out alongside the river.  After dinner, we made our way to the preserved and restored Fairmont Hotel which had been saved from demolition by being moved in an historical achievement that Dru and her Mother were instrumental in making happen.  The rooftop oyster bar at sunset was a pretty cool thing to do.  We then said an early good night to our GO’s and drove back up to NB.  Matthew was adamant that Alex see Buc Ee’s so we filled up there and grabbed some kalache’s before heading into downtown NB.  After choking down half a litre of beer and Krause’s Biergarten listening to an overly loud and off key country band, we shut it down.  At least it wasn’t Oom Pah Pah??
